Without getting too much into it Veg Soc started for a couple of reasons.
- Everyone likes free food
- A lot people think that vegetarian/vegan food is bland and not worth eating if you are an omnivore
- There wasn’t a vegetarian/vegan society at Imperial
- Personally I dislike propaganda that makes huge claims without showing any evidence for this, especially vegetarians, see below for a prime example
- Cooking is a great thing and sharing that is also pretty cool
- It looked good on my CV I wanted to give back something to the lovely geeks of Imperial
This is what I hope doesn’t happenĀ ”Eating an organic plant based diet is the single best thing you can do for your own health, maximising the potential of your bodies energies and immune system to avoid many maladies”
There are a plethora of reasons why I dislike this statement, and I’m sorry to those who I most likely have offended by this. But hear out my reasons for not enjoying this so much:
- I have yet to find that organic diet has a significant effect on health, moreover there are many organic methods that are less sustainable and more toxic than non-organic methods (see post on organic later on)
- A plant based diet if its well planned certainly isn’t bad for you, but there isn’t enough data to say how good it is for you (more on this later).
- Also it seems to negate the fact that medicine will do so much more for your maladies than eating will
- If you are going to try to persuade people using facts, then use scientifically agreed ideas, e.g. not energies. I dislike mixing proven and unproven ideas in the same sentence, not that I am entirely against the idea of energies though
- You can’t pinpoint one thing as being the single best thing for your health, the truth is that we know very little about the human body
In essence if you’d like to see what I would have put see the propaganda section
